Lovely Lake Garda, Italy

Jet-setter Jennifer Niejadlik shares this story of a recent trip to lovely Lake Garda, Italy.

A recent road trip led us to Lake Garda, Italy. We stayed three days in the country side 30 minutes outside Verona beside Lake Garda and the Alps in Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa and golf resort. My fiancé took advantage of the PGA quality golf course. The first 18 holes, Arzaga I, were designed by Jack Nicklaus II. While he was out on the green, I relaxed at the spa with an aroma oil massage and an exfoliant glycolic bio-treatment facial. The service of this 5 star hotel was nothing but top quality. The hotel itself was built in the 15th century and once was a monastery. The stone detail of this historical building was museum quality. Each morning we awoke to the chirping of small birds on our windowsill and enjoyed a traditional Italian buffet breakfast of thinly sliced meats, cheese, and fruit, in the cobblestone center courtyard.

Lake Garda, Italy

Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake and was created by glaciations. Garda is an ideal spot for windsurfing and sailing. It hosts famous regattas such as the Centomiglia.

One evening we drove to the small inlet harbor island town of Sirmione. There we took in the local sights of the grand castle, Rocca Scaligera. It was built by Mastino I della Scala in the 13th century. Once through the tower and battlements of the castle we walked around the center town square. The square was lined with tiny boutique shops and restaurants with terraces where we enjoyed a gastronomic meal of duck risotto, local wine and farm fresh cheeses for desert.

Another evening we sat right on the edge of Lake Garda at restaurant Arpege in Desenzano. There we enjoyed a mix of seafood such as a salted Branzino, and fried smelt white fish and shrimps. Again a choice of local wine was like discovering new taste buds. This restaurant was decorated in a way to ignite romance. Outside there was a beautiful fountain and a gazebo. Inside there was another fountain flowing right down one of the marble walls like a waterfall. The restaurant was newly open and treated its customers to a specially priced menu where none of the fine cooked cuisine was priced more than 14 euro. A walkway beyond the garden terrace led right to Lake Garda itself. This restaurant would be an ideal place to host a wedding reception.

In the heart of the Desenzano center is Piazza Malvezzi. It is home to an antique market known for its silverware and prints.

On the road again we spent the majority of the rest of our two week vacation in the South of France with day trips to neighboring towns outside Cannes. One day we drove to Monaco and took in what I like to call the ultimate car show with the entire lot of Ferrari’s, Porches, and Rolls Royce’s outside the Monte Carlo. Ventimiglia is just over the border and we couldn’t resist fresh baked Italian pastries, a canola and mid afternoon cappuccino. This small Italian town is known for its open market on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you are heading to Italy for a summer vacation, Lake Garda and its surrounding towns are a must see.

Tantalizing Thailand

This article was written by my friend Jenn.  Thanks for submitting it!

On a recent trip to Thailand I was surprised to see such an Italian influence in the country. One of the reasons my fiancé and I chose to travel to this country was because of the decadent flavorful food. The fresh seafood such as prawns and lobster are infused with red curry and coconut. But in addition to the local cuisine Thailand is chock full of Italian restaurants. One such superb restaurant is called “Full Moon”. It is located on the island of Koh Samui at the Anantara Hotel where we called home for two weeks. They served some of the traditional Italian dishes such as a caprese salad but my mouth watered over the blue crab risotto. Also on the menu is an “Asianated” beef carpaccio which consists of wafer-thin sliced raw tenderloin of beef with marinated straw-mushrooms, shaved Parmesan reggiano cheese and a dash of chili oil. Full Moon’s signature dish is the Giant Spaghettatta. I hope you bring your appetite for this one because it is made for two people. First you choose your favorite pasta: penne, linguine, ravioli, spaghetti or rigatoni, and then the dish is complemented with sauces of mushroom cream, spicy clam, tuna & tomato, seafood pesto and green curry beef. Or if you’d prefer something on the vegetarian side, this delicious choice: Sweet Potato Gnocchi with toasted walnuts in a warm pesto sauce. After all this heavy Italian food with an Asian flare I even found room for dessert, to keep it cool and refreshing a single scoop of each ginger and green tea ice cream.

The Jim Thompson House is home to the rebirth of the Thai silk industry. Jim Thompson was an American soldier during World War II. He later became the station chief of the Office of Strategic Services better known as the OSS based in Bangkok. The OSS was the forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA. Thompson made Thailand his permanent home and founded “The Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company”, a silk trading company. He helped create silk weaving jobs for many people. He is credited with establishing the silk trade industry. However in 1967 Thompson went on vacation to neighboring Malaysia and disappeared in the jungle with no trace. Thus this began the legend of Jim Thompson. His home in Bangkok is now a museum.

Hand crafted textiles and fabrics are in abundance in Thailand. No wonder there are so many tailors who if asked will make you an Armani style suite or Valentino gown. The detail these tailors have is as close to the real thing without paying designer prices. Tailors at “Mode Milano” in Chaweng said they could have a made to measure suite ready to wear in just two days.

And after a day of shopping of course the only way to unwind is at one of the many spas. A traditional Thai full body massage is just 300 baht, which is around ten dollars, for one hour.

Hungry Anyone?

I was recently in Milan for a day.  And there are two things you should do when you are in Milan — or Italy for that matter — shop and eat.  (If you can eat while shopping — even better.)  The fashion capital of the world has some of the best places to scarf down gourmet grub.  We went to a place called Ristorante Da Giacomo on the suggestion of our friend Bob.
So this video was a little tribute to him:
